As you may know, my connection to Type 1 diabetes is through many, many friends whose children have struggled almost their entire lifetimes with this life-altering disease that makes performing even the simplest of daily activities that others get to enjoy almost effortlessly, seem like a remote possibility. I have listened to their stories and have marveled at how these affected families rose above and forged ahead in the face of adversity, unbroken in their spirit and undeterred in their optimism, to not let Type 1 win! I have also personally experienced how diabetes, in general, changed my loved one’s world and my own. Diabetes is surely a ”family illness” because everyone who loves that person is touched, humbled, and changed by this formidable foe.
